Louis Vuitton Foundation

Louis Vuitton Foundation, designed by the renowned architect Frank Gehry, is a masterpiece of contemporary architecture. One of the key aspects in the construction of this iconic building is the use of duplex stainless steel, an alloy that combines properties of both austenitic and ferritic stainless steel.

Why was the use of duplex important in this project?

  • For its corrosion resistance

Thanks to its composition, duplex stainless steel is highly resistant to corrosion. In a climate like Paris, where structures are exposed to humidity, rain and sudden changes in temperature, this is important.

  • Lightweight and strength

The building's design features 12 large glass ‘sails’ supported by a 2205 duplex stainless steel grid. It was possible to maintain a solid structure without adding excessive weight thanks to the mechanical properties of duplex.

  • For its aesthetic

Gehry is known for his innovative designs. The complexity of the building could not have been resolved without the use of digital tools and materials such as duplex, which fits perfectly with the  curved and fluid shapes of his compositions.

  • For sustainability

Duplex stainless steel is recyclable and, due to its longevity, requires less maintenance and replacements, which contributes to a low environmental impact in the long term, aligning with the Foundation's sustainable goals.

The use of duplex stainless steel in Louis Vuitton Foundation contributes to the durability and strength of the building, reinforces Frank Gehry's artistic vision, and creates a work of art that challenges architecture and design.

This material contributes to ensure that this iconic Parisian landmark will continue to be a cultural and architectural reference for decades to come.

As each material offers different properties, it is important to make the right choice. What is beneficial for one project may not be useful for another. Don't hesitate to ask us about stainless steel, we love it!
