Underwater art
Pdf downloadA World Adrift is an underwater installation that redefines the union among art, culture and nature. This fascinating work is accessible by boat from the coast of Hillsborough in Carriacou (Caribbean) and can be enjoyed by divers and snorkellers alike, as it is only 4 metres deep.
The sculptures are designed with components that are resistant, respectful and promote the balance of the underwater ecosystem. These materials, including the AISI 316L stainless steel of the vessels, have been selected for their quality and environmental neutrality.
Jason deCaires Taylor
The creator is Jason deCaires Taylor, a pioneer in underwater art known for works such as The Musician and Coralarium. Taylor combines artistic excellence with a deep ecological commitment in his work. His sculptures, in addition to being visually spectacular, are designed to tell stories that connect humans with nature, raising awareness of issues such as climate change and marine conservation.
In A World Adrift we find 30 origami-shaped boats, representing the fragility of island ecosystems, each one navigated by a local schoolboy, symbolising the uncertain waters of the future. The sails provide global temperature data, while the other elements serve as artificial reefs, offering a sanctuary for marine life in an era of ecological urgency.
Thanks to local community support and international interest, A World Adrift is emerging as a key tourist destination to raise awareness of the urgent reality of climate change, a truth that was devastatingly underscored in July 2024, when Hurricane Beryl, a Category 5 storm, left the surrounding islands reeling from its destructive force.
