Stainless steel is known for its excellent corrosion resistance, mechanical strength and ease of maintenance. However, these qualities require proper and regular cleaning. In this article, we would like to underline the importance of keeping stainless steel surfaces clean in order to preserve the passive layer that protects it.
Contrary to what is sometimes thought, stainless steel is not a material completely immune to dirt or certain aggressive agents. The prolonged presence of contaminants, such as grease, dust, residues of inadequate cleaning or even iron particles, can alter its performance. For that reason, the cleaning should not be seen as an aesthetic question, but as a technical necessity that guarantees the good state of the material.
For general cleaning, water and soap or neutral detergent applied with a soft cloth or sponge that does not scratch the surface is recommended. Rinsing with clean abundant water and subsequent drying are essential steps to avoid marks and ensure a uniform finish. In areas where the water contains salts or minerals, it is advisable to use demineralised water for the final rinse and for reducing the frequency of this cleaning.

In the case of more stubborn dirt, such as rust stains, dried grease or discolourations, specific products can be used depending on the type of residue. It is important to avoid abrasive products, such as bleaches, as they can cause pitting or localised corrosion.
The choice of cleaning methods must take into account both the grade of the stainless steel finish and the environment in which it is used. Polished surfaces require different care than satin-finished or engraved ones, and in aggressive environments, such as food industries or coastal areas, frequent cleaning becomes even more crucial.
At Cedinox, we recommend establishing maintenance routines adapted to each application. With proper cleaning and the use of compatible products, stainless steel retains its technical and aesthetic properties over time, offering reliable performance even in demanding conditions. Keeping it clean is therefore an essential part of its durability and functionality.
